Commissioning
Commissioning is an exciting and enjoyable process. If you’ve never done it before it might seem intimidating at first, but you don’t have to have a lot of knowledge of design or even really know exactly what you want. My process is designed to help us discover that together. Of course if you’ve embarked on this sort of thing before or know exactly what you want then that’s great too.
My aim is to create something you love, something that speaks to you, something that brings you pleasure everyday. This is my passion. This is what I love.
A typical commissioning process looks something like this.
You don’t have to have all the answers, anything you don’t know or perhaps aren’t sure how to articulate, I can help with.
- Telephone conversion to discuss the outline of the project
- This will include the problem you want to solve: What does it do? Is it storage - what for? Does it provide a function in the space i.e. to help zone a room?
- Ideas and inspiration: Have you seen something you like but it’s not quite the right thing for you, do you have an idea in your head, or are we starting from a clean slate?
- Do you have ideas about materials or aesthetics?
- Budget and any other constraints.

- Meeting/Agree a brief
- This can be a telephone conversation, but sometimes a meeting in your home can add value as it allows me to get an idea of your design aesthetic, and to understand the space it will live in. Often I’ll need to measure the space to ensure everything fits.
- Finalise a brief. The brief is important as it spells out what we’re both expecting and includes inspiration, materials, colours, aesthetic, budget, special requirements, finish, delivery.

- Design proposal and estimate
- This is usually in the form of a 2D CAD drawing and is an outline of what the finished item will look like.
- How much it will cost. If different materials or finishes are an option they can be broken down here.

- Iteration/Sign off
- You confirm you would like to go ahead based on the design, or with some refinements.
- From this point all work is chargeable
- One design iteration is included in the initial quote, further iterations are chargeable at an hourly rate and is dependent on the size of the work.
- Final design is agreed and signed off.
- I’ll request payment of a deposit or the full amount depending on the size of the project.

- Technical design & Build
- I produce technical drawings. This may result in the final design being tweaked as I finalise the planned construction techniques. Any significant changes will be discussed and explained.
